Understanding Is Not Forgiveness. . .

Professor Berk’s talks traced clearly some of the factors that led to the vibrancy of the Jewish community of Warsaw and Poland – and the factors that led to its demise among Poles and at the hands of the Nazis. A clear warning, however – Explanation is not exoneration. We may come to understand the historical and cultural factors that brought the tragedy to pass. We may understand the viewpoint of the Polish nation. But we mustn’t forgive what was done. At the same time, it is important to remember the good things that were done.
